Draft Analysis: Tyler Scott

  • Height: 5’10”
  • Weight: 177 lb
  • College: Cincinatti
  • Tape watched: Tulane, Arkansas, UCF, Indiana, Miami (OH)
  • NFL Comparison: Tyler Lockett

Pros

  • Speed

If you’ve heard of Tyler Scott, you know what he does best. Scott is a true field stretcher, boasting a 16.4 yards per reception line. He gets to top speed faster than just about any receiver in the draft. He consistently found his way behind the safety and split defenders with the best of them.

  • Release

Lightning quick feet and capitalizing on his size, Scott is very difficult to press at the line of scrimmage. He was rarely pressed in the tape I watched, and for good reason.

  • YAC

Tyler Scott has plenty of juice to create post-catch.  He can cut back and break angles at any moment.  He was effective at forcing missed tackles (12) and his 6.6 average yards-after-catch put him in the top half of his draft class.

Midline

  • Route Running

Scott has ups and downs in his route running techniques. When he can open his stride, good luck responding to his head fakes and fake cuts. He is extremely explosive in and out of route breaks.

Scott can really be impacted by contact, however. He often gets squeezed to the sideline. Scott can also get lost and drift off his routes while navigating traffic across the middle of the field.

A terrific route that Scott just can’t convert

Cons

  • Hands

A major question mark with Scott is his ability to convert catches, especially when contested. With a very limited catch radius, Scott needs to convert more difficult plays.

  • Size

Scott is small with a slender stature. Physicality is a question mark in his game. He will struggle to make plays outside his frame. Durability is always a concern for players his size as well.

  • Versatility

For someone with the size and skillset of Tyler Scott, it is disappointing that he hardly played in the slot. Scott played almost exclusively on the perimeter. He offers very little in terms of blocking, also.

Overview

Tyler Scott is a dynamic playmaker who offers NFL teams a successful downfield threat. Though undersized, he excels in post-catch opportunities. If Scott can clean up his drops and be more aggressive at the catch-point, he could revitalize a struggling offense. He may not have the hands of Tyler Lockett, but the similarities are real.
