Draft Analysis: Marvin Mims Jr.

  • Height: 5’11”
  • Weight: 188 lb
  • College: Oklahoma
  • Tape watched: Kent State, Oklahoma State, Tulane 2021, Texas Tech 2021, Texas 2021
  • College Comparison: John Brown

Pros

  • Contested Catching
Throw the ball near Mims and you have a chance. Whether its withstanding contact through the catch, or soaring in the air, Mims makes plays on the football. He is aggressive with his hands and has great body control.
  • Blocking
Effort, effort, and more effort, Mims takes no plays off. He is extremely committed to the run game and sealing off the next defender in front of him. He has good form, and a great drive phase to finish blocks. Mims’ tapes against Tulane and OK State are clinical.
  • RAC
With great contact balance due to a strong lower body, Mims can break a lot of tackles post-catch. He is a true North-South runner and picks up free yards in front of him.
  • Versatility
Experience in the slot, on the perimeter, and returning kicks is always a good skillset to have.

Midline

  • Route Running
While he was not asked to run a high mix of routes, Mims does have questions on separation and his ability to get in and out of route breaks. Mims does not possess game breaking speed or agility. He shows some burst into route breaks, but rarely any out of them. He is very good at keeping plays alive for his quarterback and even finding soft spots in zone coverage.

Cons

  • Separation
Mims Jr. struggles to separate from defenders. He could struggle to threaten downfield.
  • Release
Press defenders will give Mims issues in the NFL. Lack of high-end burst, agility, and change of direction hinder Mims’ release packages.
Top of screen: The defender has inside shade on Mims, and Mims forces the easy vertical release. He never threatens the defender and eventually gets muscled out of bounds.

Overview

Marvin Mims Jr. has an interesting blend of skills for a receiver. With great ball skills, but less than ideal athletic traits, Mims looks to be a safe target that may not be the first read for the quarterback. I think he projects best in the slot, where there is potential for more open space. Mims currently holds the best blocker award for my draft class evaluations. Marvin Mims Jr. should carve out a nice role in an offense and become a dependable option.
