Draft Analysis: Khalil Shakir

  • Height: 6’0″
  • Weight: 196
  • College: Boise State
  • Tape watched: Nevada, UCF, Fresno State
  • NFL Comparison: Kendall Hinton

Pros

  • RAC/Playmaking
Khalil Shakir can make defenders miss in open space. He has nice hips that lend him a good juke move. He can slip tackles pretty effectively as well. Shakir made some very impressive in-air adjustments to footballs, showing off his body control.

Midline

  • Route Running
Khalil Shakir’s route running is a mixed bag of good and bad. There are far too many times he feels out a defense and has no distinguishable plan of attack. He does not explode into route stems from the line of scrimmage. When he does have a plan, Shakir has some good nuances to his route running. He can slip off of contact and create a good amount of separation in short areas. The RPO heavy offense of Boise State has not given Shakir a great starting block for his NFL advancement.
  • Athleticism
While he ran a very solid 40 yard dash (4.43s), Shakir put up average, to below average testing numbers. He has pretty low level agility, and doesn’t make up for it with height, weight, or arm length. Shakir likely is going to have to win by strengthening his route running and contested catching.

Cons

  • Hands
Far too many drops on tape for a receiver like Shakir. Even some of his impressive plays resulted from double catches or bobbles. With a near historically low wingspan, the challenge is even greater for Shakir to secure footballs. He will have to improve upon this area to be a contributor in the NFL.
  • Blocking
A seriously lacking element to Khalil Shakir’s game is blocking. He hesitates at every level to stalk and initiate contact.

Overview

Khalil Shakir may have a long road to NFL contributions. Shaky hands, blocking abilities, and lackluster route running may limit Shakir to special teams duties early on in his NFL career. He does possess solid playmaking and ball tracking abilities. Some players just have a knack for sticking around and making plays, Shakir may be one of them.
