Draft Analysis: Antoine Green

  • Height: 6’2″
  • Weight: 199 lb
  • College: North Carolina
  • Tape watched: Pitt, Notre Dame
  • College Comparison: Tyrie Cleveland

Pros

  • Size
Antoine Green looks the part of a physical receiver. He has a muscular frame that carries well on the football field.
  • Downfield Threat
One of the premier field stretchers in college football, Antoine Green averaged over 19 yards per catch the last two seasons. He has a strong and powerful drive downfield that looks seamless. Green’s long strides eat up cushion and his upper body strength keeps defenders away.

Midline

  • Hands
More of a body catcher, Green finds the football and makes plays. While he isn’t as dominant in the air as you would like a big receiver to be, drops did not seem to be a concern.
  • RAC
Antoine Green can be a challenge to bring down. He runs aggressively and has nice contact balance. His stiff hips and slow stop-start agility hinders big plays after the catch, however.
  • Blocking
There are great examples of Green clamping up and driving defenders out of plays. He should develop into a solid perimeter blocking receiver. The only thing setting back this trait from being a Pro, is his ability to give up on plays and miss out on important blocks in the run game.

Cons

  • Route Running
Green is very much a vertical plane receiver. He is best when able to open his strides up without delay, allowing him to run by defenders. Even his horizontal route package included arrow routes and drags to limit his cuts. He has stiff hips that telegraph his next move through routes.
  • Release
For someone like Green, I would have liked to see him challenge press coverage vertically off the ball, instead of his go-to moves like split and jab releases. Mirror press coverage gave him the most issues, where defenders could just turn and run without initiating contact. Antoine Green could heavily benefit from taking the press battle to the defensive back.
  • Versatility
With only two seasons of college football, neither of which produced more than 43 receptions, and Green being limited to the Z receiver spot, there are multiple unknowns in Green’s play. Whether he didn’t start the game on the field, or was in and out during drives, he was not a full time starter. Some of his big chunk production came in “garbage” time, where UNC was down multiple scores.

Overview

Antoine Green is a very appealing prospect with his measurables and ability to stretch the field. He looks the part of a real NFL perimeter receiver. Unfortunately, with his rigid route running and overall experience questions, it is hard to project Green higher than a mid to late round flyer at the next level.
